The book is very well written, a refreshing departure from so much of what fills bookstore shelves these days. From the unique viewpoint of a young girl, the author paints a vivid picture of actual events during those harrowing years of WWII when so many Americans and Filipinos, both military and civilian, took to the mountains in an effort to survive rather than surrender to the Japanese invaders and face internment in a prison or concentration camp. Many did not survive. They were the victims of Japanese brutality, malaria, dysentery, beri-beri, dengue fever, or simply starvation. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2014 )
